Audiometric testing. Audiometric testing is mandated by OHS Code s. 221: a baseline audiogram is required within 6 months of a worker first being exposed at or above 85 dBA Lex,8, with follow-up audiograms required at least every 2 years (more frequent than the federal-state norm, but on a 2-year rather than annual cycle). Audiograms must be conducted by an audiometric technician approved by an Alberta-registered audiologist.
Hearing protection. Where exposures cannot be reduced below the exposure limit through engineering or administrative controls, the employer must provide hearing protection devices selected and used in accordance with CSA Z94.2 (current edition) — referenced via s. 224. CSA Z94.2 uses an A-B-C classification (Class A is the highest-attenuation, Class C is the lowest) and provides selection guidance based on measured exposure — this is the Canadian counterpart to the US NRR derating framework. Noise measurement. Noise surveys and dosimetry must be conducted in accordance with CSA Z107.56 (current edition), which specifies measurement strategy, instrument calibration, and reporting requirements for occupational noise exposure assessments.
Alberta is the largest Canadian oil and gas employer base — upstream drilling rigs, oil sands operations, and gas plants are all subject to OHS Code Part 16.
